Dehradun, Uttarakhand
Mussoorie is 35 km from Dehradun. On paper, that sounds like an hour's drive. In reality, the last 15 km of that route is a mountain climb with hairpin bends, slow-moving tourist traffic on weekends, and the occasional truck taking up most of the road. The distance is not the challenge — the road is.
This guide covers what the Dehradun to Mussoorie taxi service actually involves: the route, what the drive is like, the fare, when to go, what to do once you are there, and how to book a cab that does not disappear when you need it for the return.
The standard route from Dehradun to Mussoorie runs 35 km via Rajpur Road. The first half — from Clock Tower through Rajpur — is a flat, wide road with good visibility. Once you cross Rajpur village, the climb begins and the road narrows considerably.
The section through Barlowganj and up to Library Chowk is the part most visitors are not prepared for. The bends are tight, the drops on one side are steep, and during peak season (May–June and October) this stretch can take 45 minutes on its own because of the tourist traffic queue. A driver who knows this road drives it differently from someone following GPS — knowing which lane to hold, where to slow before a blind bend, and when to pull over briefly to let a downhill truck pass.
On a clear weekday morning, the full drive from central Dehradun to Library Chowk takes 1.5 hours. On a busy weekend afternoon, plan for 2 to 2.5 hours.
An alternate route via Kempty Falls Road (through Vikasnagar) adds about 20 km but avoids the Rajpur congestion entirely. Our drivers use this when the main road is blocked or during heavy holiday weekends — it is worth knowing it exists.
The one-way Dehradun to Mussoorie taxi fare with Shiv Yogi Taxi is ₹1,899. This is a fixed fare — confirmed before departure, not calculated at arrival. It covers the full drive from your pickup point in Dehradun to Library Chowk or Picture Palace in Mussoorie.
What is included: driver, fuel, the vehicle for the journey, and all tolls on the route. What is not included: parking charges in Mussoorie (the town charges vehicles by the hour at entry points), or waiting time if you are using the driver for the full day rather than a one-way drop.
Many visitors ask about a full-day Mussoorie taxi — where the driver takes you up, waits while you explore Mall Road, Kempty Falls and Lal Tibba, and brings you back to Dehradun in the evening. This is our most commonly booked option for this route. Call +91 8979074776 to confirm the full-day rate for your dates.
People who have only driven on NH highways sometimes underestimate what mountain roads require from a driver. The Mussoorie road after Barlowganj has specific characteristics that are worth knowing about:
No room for error on the bends. Several hairpins have a sheer drop on one side with no barrier. A driver who knows these bends stays in the right lane well before the curve — not after it. This is not a road where you want to be driven by someone who is navigating it for the first time.
Fog in winter and early morning. Between November and February, fog on the Barlowganj stretch can reduce visibility to 20 metres. Our drivers know which stretches to slow for and when to pull over and wait rather than push through.
One-way traffic during peak season. From May through June, Mussoorie entry points operate timed one-way control — all vehicles go up in one window, all come down in another. Your driver needs to know these timings or you can end up waiting an hour at the barrier.
This is why a Dehradun to Mussoorie cab from a local operator who knows the road is worth more than the cheapest option you can find on an aggregator app.
March to June is peak season. Weather is pleasant, the Himalayan peaks are visible on clear days, and Mall Road is lively. The downside is crowds — hotels fill up weeks in advance during May and June, and the road gets congested. Book your taxi early for weekends.
July and August bring heavy monsoon rain. Mussoorie itself is beautiful in the rain — waterfalls are full, the valleys are impossibly green. But the road can be treacherous after heavy overnight showers. Rockfalls on the Barlowganj section are common in July. Not recommended for a casual day trip unless you are comfortable with uncertainty on the road.
September and October are the best months for this trip. Monsoon is over, the landscape is lush, visibility is excellent, crowds are manageable and the road is in good condition. For a first-time visitor, this window gives the best experience with the least hassle.
November to February offers the possibility of snow, which draws families and couples. Snow on the road means chains or 4WD vehicles become necessary — our drivers carry chains during winter. Call ahead if you are planning a December or January trip so we can confirm vehicle availability with the right equipment.
When you book a full-day Mussoorie taxi from Dehradun, it helps to give the driver a rough idea of your plan so he knows where to wait between stops. Here are the main spots and roughly how long each takes:
Mall Road: The central promenade. Walking it end to end takes 30–40 minutes. Most restaurants, shops and viewpoints are here or a short walk away. Your driver parks at the designated taxi stand at the Mussoorie entry gate.
Kempty Falls: 15 km from Mussoorie town, about 30 minutes by road. The falls themselves are worth the drive — a wide natural waterfall with a pool at the base. Busy on weekends. Give it at least 1.5 hours if you want to walk down and back up.
Lal Tibba: The highest point in Mussoorie at 2,275 metres. On clear days you can see Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri peaks from here. Takes about 45 minutes including the drive to the viewpoint and time at the top.
Camel's Back Road: A 3 km walking path along the ridge with views of the Doon Valley on one side and the Himalayan range on the other. Best in the morning before haze builds. A quiet alternative to the Mall Road crowds.
Company Garden: A maintained botanical garden near the town, good for families with children. Takes about an hour at a comfortable pace.
A full day covering Mall Road, Kempty Falls and Lal Tibba comfortably needs 7–8 hours from Dehradun departure. Start no later than 9 AM to avoid the worst of the road congestion going up.
The return drive is faster — coming downhill, the bends are easier to manage and traffic flows quicker. On a normal day, Mussoorie to Dehradun takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. During peak season, leave Mussoorie before 5 PM if possible — the downhill traffic after sunset can back up significantly near Barlowganj.
If you are using our one-way drop service and making your own way back, shared taxis from Mussoorie's Library Chowk to Dehradun run throughout the day until around 7 PM. After that, private cabs are your only option. It is worth pre-booking your return with us rather than arranging it at the end of a tiring day in the hills.
Many visitors combine Mussoorie with a broader Uttarakhand trip. Some common combinations that work well as part of a longer itinerary from Dehradun:
Mussoorie is on the way to Yamunotri for pilgrims doing the Char Dham Yatra from Dehradun — some groups stop overnight in Mussoorie before continuing north. It also works as a one-night stopover when travelling between Dehradun and Uttarkashi.
If you are based in Delhi and thinking about a Mussoorie trip, our Delhi to Dehradun taxi can drop you in Dehradun, from where the Mussoorie cab takes over. Many Delhi families use this combination for a weekend hill escape without the fatigue of driving the entire Delhi–Mussoorie route themselves.

The standard route is via Rajpur Road — through Rajpur village and up through Barlowganj to Library Chowk. An alternate route via Vikasnagar and Kempty Falls Road is used during heavy peak-season congestion on the main road. Our drivers choose based on current traffic conditions — you will always take the faster option on the day.
For comfort, luggage and flexibility, a private Dehradun to Mussoorie cab is the better choice. Shared cabs from Dehradun's Mussoorie Bus Stand are cheaper but run on fixed schedules, drop at one point, and are typically overcrowded. With a private taxi you leave when you want, stop where you want, and have the vehicle available for your return. The price difference for a group of three or four is minimal.
September to November for the best combination of clear views, post-monsoon freshness and manageable crowds. March to June for lively weather and full hill-station atmosphere but with more traffic. Avoid July and August for road safety. December to February for snow, but confirm road conditions before travelling — our drivers will advise you honestly on what to expect.
