Dehradun, Uttarakhand
Most people who plan a Char Dham Yatra spend weeks researching temples, rituals and accommodation — and then book their taxi three days before departure. That is the part that goes wrong. The cab is the backbone of your entire pilgrimage. If it breaks down above Kedarnath at 3,500 metres, no app will send you a replacement.
This guide is written for people who want to do the Char Dham Yatra properly — with a clear picture of the routes, what the roads are actually like, how long each leg takes, what vehicle makes sense, and what separates a reliable Char Dham taxi service from Dehradun from one that will leave you stranded at a dhaba somewhere in the Rudraprayag district.
The Chota Char Dham — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — are four sacred shrines in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Each sits at high altitude, and three of the four require trekking on foot to reach the main temple. The yatra follows a traditional east-to-west sequence: Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, then Badrinath.
Dehradun is the natural starting point for most pilgrims because it has the nearest airport (Jolly Grant), the main railway station, and good road connectivity to all four dhams. Almost every Char Dham Yatra package from Dehradun begins and ends in the city, making it the base camp of the entire circuit.
Before booking anything, it helps to understand what you are getting into on each leg. These are not smooth highway drives.
Yamunotri (via Barkot, Janki Chatti): Around 170 km from Dehradun, taking 6–7 hours by road to Janki Chatti. From there, a 5 km trek on foot reaches the temple. The road beyond Barkot is narrow with frequent landslides during monsoon. A high-clearance vehicle is essential from this point forward.
Gangotri (via Uttarkashi): Around 250 km from Dehradun, roughly 8–9 hours to Gangotri town. The road through Uttarkashi is better than most Char Dham routes, but the final stretch to Gangotri involves hairpin bends above river gorges. Unlike the other three dhams, the Gangotri temple is accessible directly by road — no trek required.
Kedarnath (via Guptkashi, Sonprayag): Around 225 km from Dehradun to Sonprayag, then 5 km by road to Gaurikund, then a 16 km trek to the temple at 3,583 metres. This is the most physically demanding dham. Your taxi drops you at Sonprayag or Gaurikund and waits while you complete the trek — typically an overnight stay at the top. Helicopter services from Phata are available for those who cannot trek.
Badrinath (via Joshimath): Around 300 km from Dehradun, 9–10 hours on a good day. The road from Joshimath to Badrinath follows the Alaknanda river and is one of the most scenic stretches of the entire yatra. The temple is accessible by road. This is the final dham and marks the completion of the circuit before the return to Dehradun.
This is the part most pilgrims underestimate. The Char Dham roads are among the most demanding in India — single-lane mountain tracks, frequent rockfall zones, river crossings and stretches where the road has partially collapsed and been patched with gravel. A small sedan will struggle, overheat and make every passenger uncomfortable.
The right vehicle for a Char Dham cab from Dehradun is an Innova Crysta or equivalent full-size SUV. Here is why it matters in practice: better ground clearance means fewer scrapes on broken road edges, a stronger engine handles the altitude and gradient without strain, the suspension absorbs the constant vibration from mountain tracks, and the cabin is large enough that six pilgrims can sit comfortably for 8-hour driving days without arriving at the dham already exhausted.
For families or groups of 7 or more, a Tempo Traveller is the better option — more seating, luggage space for everyone, and the same hill-capable build.
On the Char Dham circuit, you are not just hiring a cab — you are spending 10 to 12 days with the same person who will navigate you through fog at Kedarnath, negotiate with the queue at Badrinath, wake up at 4 AM for an early temple darshan and stay calm when a section of road is blocked by a truck for two hours.
A good Char Dham driver knows where to stop for safe meals, which stretches of road to drive slowly on, how to handle the one-way traffic controls on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway, and — importantly — what to do when the weather turns. Drivers who have done the circuit multiple times do not panic at altitude. Drivers who are doing it for the first time often do.
When you book a Char Dham taxi service from Dehradun with Shiv Yogi Tour & Travels, your driver has completed the full circuit before. That is not a line on a brochure — it is the reason nothing goes wrong.
The temples open in late April or early May (exact dates are announced each year) and close in October or November before winter. Within that window, the experience varies significantly by month.
May and June are the most popular months — temples are open, weather is clear and the roads are at their best before monsoon. Crowds are heavy, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath. Book early.
July and August bring the monsoon. Roads can be blocked by landslides, some stretches near Kedarnath become impassable after heavy rain, and helicopter services to Kedarnath are frequently cancelled. Most experienced pilgrims avoid this window unless they have flexible dates and time to wait out road closures.
September and October are excellent — crowds thin out after monsoon, the landscape is green and clear, roads are generally good, and the cooler temperatures make the Kedarnath trek far more comfortable. This is the ideal window for first-time pilgrims. Temples close in late October or November so plan the return accordingly.
The Uttarakhand government requires all Char Dham pilgrims to register before the yatra. This is free and mandatory — without registration, you may be turned back at checkpoints. Registration is done online at the official Char Dham Yatra registration portal. Carry a printout or digital copy of your registration certificate along with a valid photo ID throughout the journey.
Medical fitness is also checked at certain points — particularly for Kedarnath. Pilgrims with heart conditions or severe respiratory issues should consult a doctor before planning the high-altitude sections of the yatra.

📞 +91 8979074776 💬 WhatsApp for QuoteThe complete circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — takes 10 to 12 days from Dehradun. This includes driving days between dhams, trekking time to Yamunotri and Kedarnath, and at least one overnight at each dham for morning darshan. Rushing it into 8 days is possible but not recommended — you spend most of it in the vehicle and miss the experience.
An Innova Crysta is the standard recommendation for groups of 4–6 people. It handles the mountain roads well, has enough boot space for a 10-day trip's luggage, and is comfortable for long driving days. For groups of 7 or more, a Tempo Traveller is the practical choice. Sedans are not suitable for the Char Dham roads — the ground clearance is insufficient for broken mountain tracks.
Our Char Dham taxi package from Dehradun starts at ₹25,000 for the full 10–12 day circuit in an Innova Crysta. The final price depends on travel dates, group size and any additional stops. Call or WhatsApp +91 8979074776 with your dates and we will give you an exact quote — no vague estimates.
Char Dham 2025 typically opens in late April or early May. Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya, with Kedarnath and Badrinath opening a few days later. Exact dates are announced by temple committees close to the season. For confirmed 2025 opening dates, check the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website.
Yes — registration is mandatory for all pilgrims and is free. You can register at the Uttarakhand tourist registration portal. Carry your certificate and a valid ID throughout the yatra. Some checkpoints, particularly near Kedarnath, also do a basic health check.
Yes. A dedicated private Char Dham cab from Dehradun is the most comfortable and flexible option. Government shared jeeps run between some dhams but operate on fixed schedules, have limited space for luggage and do not wait for you while you complete darshan. A private taxi gives you full control over your timing and pace — which matters when you are planning a pilgrimage, not a day trip. See our full services and packages page for details.
